Shreyshi Singh -Bihar’s only participant at CWG

PATNA: Shooter Shreyshi Singh, Bihar’s lone participant in the Delhi Commonwealth Games, is hopeful of getting a medal. Singh, the nineteen-year-old former national shooting champion, is trained under guidance of Athens Olympic silver medalist Rajvardhan Singh Rathore.

Seema Tomar and Shreyasi (both trap) are in the shot gun section among women in the CWG.

” I am hopeful of getting some medal,” Shreyshi told TOI over phone from CWG village. “Shooting is in my blood. I have inherited this tradition from my late grandfather Kumar Surendra Singh. He was the president of the Indian Rifle Association and then my father the late Digvijay Singh who served as a president of the association,” she said.

“I started practicising at a very early age and started participating in various national and international events under the able guidance of a close family friend Rajvardhan Rathore,” she said.

A native of Giddhaur in Jamui district of Bihar, Shreyasi completed her plus two from DPS R K Puram, New Delhi. She is currently pursuing her graduation from Hansraj College, Delhi.

“Shreyasi is representing Bihar in CWG 2010,” said Bihar State Rifle Association secretary Kumar Tripurari Singh.

Shreyasi’s coach Paramjit Singh Sodhi is her mentor. She is India’s youngest woman shooter in eight years to have clinched a medal in the national shooting championship with senior record with 72/75.

Shreyasi has participated in dozens of shooting events including the Junior World Championship at Suhl (Germany) in 2008, Junior World Championship 2009, Lahti, ( Finland), Asian Clay Championship, 2009, Almaty, (Kazakhistan), ISF World Cup at Beijing, Acapulco (Mexico), Munich (Austria) and Bangkok (all in 2010).

Shreyasi has expertise in both single and double trap shooting events. These events are also referred to as the clay shooting events, wherein a clay bird flies out at a distance of 50 feet and the shooter is required to aim and break it before it hits the ground, Shreyasi said.

“Two set of CWG trials were held for the eligible members. I was averaging 71 points till the last trial and was in a tie with another shooter which I finally won,” she said. Her score in the Commonwealth Federation Shooting Championship (72/75) also helped in the final selection for CWG.

“I am very proud of my daughter. I have no words to express my feelings. She has made us proud and kept the family tradition growing,” Shreyas’s mother Putul Devi said.
