Maharashtra bureaucrats learning from Bihar

A number of Maharashtra cadre bureaucrats hailing from Bihar recently spent a week in Patna to understand the success story of Nitish Kumar, the leader of the once ‘Bimaru’ state. Most of these IAS officers have been living in Maharashtra for well over two decades. When they cleared their civil services exam ages ago, their first choice was Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu since in those days, compared to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra was the best administered state. In terms of economy, development and the babudom’s credibility, Maharashtra was miles ahead of others. Today, however, it is lagging behind on many of these fronts. Its debt burden has crossed Rs 1.91 lakh crore, corruption has seeped across all levels and the babus are flagrantly dishonest and nepotistic. Bureaucrats from Bihar feel it is high time CM Prithviraj Chavan deputes a high-level team to study the administrative measures taken by Nitish Kumar to restore the public’s confidence. Otherwise, Maharashtra’s descent into ignominy will continue unabated.
