Congress corporator in Maharashtra follows Bihar model

Congress corporator from Colaba in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wants to follow in Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s footsteps. Vinod Shekhar demanded that the BMC distribute bicycles to girl students.

Bihar government had distributed about 25 lakh bicycles to girl students to bring them into schools. This scheme played a vital role in Bihar elections to reinstate Nitish Kumar as chief minister. Shekhar believes in the strategy and wants to implement it in the city. He has mooted a proposal to distribute bicycles to girl students of civic schools.

In the proposal, Shekhar says that the BMC is spending crores of rupees for civic school students, despite the students’ numbers dropping continuously. The bicycle is also an eco-friendly vehicle and the girls can ride on it easily to reach school, he added.

He also cited that the bicycles should be distributed to girls studying in Std V and above. The proposal will be discussed in BMC’s next general body meeting.

“It is not about following Nitish Kumar’s strategy, but it is about taking care of the need of girl students’ in city,” he said.

“I am demanding the bicycles for eco-friendly reasons. This doesn’t mean Congress is trying to copy any government,” he clarified and requested that the issue not be politicised.

Ashish Shelar, BJP leader in BMC appreciated the move. “Now, the Congress has also realised that the NDA has implemented a workable formula and it should be followed,” he said.
