Anonymous leads Nationwide Protest against Internet Censorship Today

Anomymous India LogoA group of Computer Activists under the banner of  Anonymous India is organizing Nationwide Protest  today against the recent attempts of Internet Censorship in India.

There would be protests across in all major cities viz, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore, Hyderabad, Calicut, Nagpur, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur starting from 4PM to 6 PM, according to its Facebook Page.

The demonstrations and protests would be entirely peaceful  and non-violent in nature demanding an immediate full stop on any practices hunting Internet Freedom in India.

If you Wish to join this Movement, you can  get the direction and location of Protests in your city at Anonymous’s Facebook Page.

According to Anonymous, Government has enacted laws that gives it a free pass to censor our Facebook posts, listen to every Skype conversation we have, monitor our tweets or blogs or access private photographs and documents we store online, or track our location using our mobile phones or surveil all of your online activity.

The Government is also in process of building The Great Indian Firewall on the pattern of China.

The recent attack on the Freedom of Speech and Expression by the Information Technology (intermediary rules) 2011 rules, which requires that intermediaries such as website host, including social netwoking sites and search engines do not host, display, share or publish information deemed as objectionable on re eiving a complaint by aggreived person, the intermediary site is liable to act within 36 hours and removed the content without prior notice.

The action of the government in taking away the citizen’s legitimate freedom of speech and expression using digital censorship is illegal and contradicts the freedom guarenteed by constitution of India. We are organising a Peaceful protest to express our opposition to such dictatorial rules.

Uncommon Protest

This type of protests is uncommon in India, where there is no Leader. Anonymous People have decided the protests on the web through Social Media and Emails. All Participants would be wearing a mask  with no Identity Document with himself.

The group is also targeting various Government Websites with DDoS attacks. DDoS attacks are considered as the cyber equivalent to non-violent protests in which a particular Websites is so overloaded that it fails to serve users and goes down. In the past Anonymous has targeted websites of CBI, CERT,  IT Ministry, Reliance, PVR Cinemas etc.

On Various Websites associated with Anonymous, it says, We will not tolerate any more injustice. We will not use violence, we will not break any laws, but we will retaliate. We will protest. We are Anonymous. We do not forgive the denial of basic human rights. We do not forget those who assist the oppressed.

Further there is a warning to Government,  To the tyrannical government of India … Expect us.
