Dead Body of Brahmeshwar Singh Mukhiyaji

Brahmeshwar Singh was the former mukhiya of Khopira panchayat of the Sandesh block of Bhojpur district, assumed leadership of the then Ranvir Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (also Ranvir Sena) from the then mukhiya of Belaur block, Sheo Narain Choudhary, in 1994.  In fact, under Choudhary’s leadership, the samiti was not in a position to counter the move of CPI (ML)’s decision to impose economic ban on farmers in several villages of Bhojpur district. Brahmeshwar finally turned the samiti into a militant organisation which finally became Ranvir Sena.

On July 25, 1995, the Ranvir Sena killed six people belonging to Musahar caste in Sarathua village, located near the Belaur village, the Sena headquarters. But Singh came into limelight after the infamous carnage at Bathani Tola under the Sahar block of Bhojpur district on July 10, 1996, in which the victims were mostly children and women.

This was followed by a series of massacres in different villages of Bhojpur district. Four people were killed by Sena at Chandi village in February, three in Patalpura in March and five in Nanaur in April month of the same year. The spreading activities of the Sena finally forced the state government to ban it in August 1995.

Brahmeshwar Singh was arrested in Patna on August 29, 2002 on several accounts of murder. Ranvir Sena had influence in areas like Jahanabad, Patna, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Bhabhua and Buxar districts.

Internet has been flooded with mixed response about this killing.

Some people call it as an act of opposition. A typical comment so a social networking site read, ” Master mind behind this is some one who is jealous of Bihar development under Nitish govt.. It can be Lalu or it cab be any one from Congress . This is really sad that Nitish who is trying his best for bihar is beng challanged. We must maintain our peace and let Nitish wok in his way to get the mastermind behind bars”.

Others slam Brahmeshwar Mukhiya
“Brahmeshwar Singh become infamous because of inefficiency of our system, People from that area were compelled to fight against CPI(ML) cadres. Whatever he did can never be justified but steps must be taken so that another Brahmeshwar Singh is not made”

Others supported him
“He was the one who was fighting against maoist single handily…after his arrest oly maoist menace has grown in bihar…people are forced to flee their village..sell their land..and live like a begger in bihar…Ahat option people like him has, when govt r surrendering to maoist??”

Another user commented, “I am not defending what he did but I do agree with you if there is a failure of the system to protect you and your community is harassed and squeezed then it will always result in bringing people like Mukhiyaji. He may be outlawed but a necessary outlaw that his community sees as their protection. If he is a terrorist then aren’t CPI(ML) not the same? If law and administration can not protect everyone with no double standards then only people going against it should be termed terrorists but in a failed system how can they be called the same?”

“Bramheswar Singh was necessity for that time in Bihar when Maoists invaded the Bihar villages, and when the local govt administration are failed to protect farmers! The organization was a reciprocative action in a society where the govt failed to act against CPI ML atrocities ”

And some who never have set their foot on soil of bihar were more idealistic, “The militant group should never be allowed to be breed that kill innocents, just civilians whose only fault is that they belong to a particular caste. Though not exactly happy coz he was not absconding, but was released on bail and killed by another millitant group. The story should not continue.”
