Kosi Mega Rail Bridge ready between Nirmali and Saraigarh

After the huge Kosi Mahasetu (Mega Bridge), Mithilanchal region of Bihar  is all set to get another Bridge on the Kosi River connecting Nirmali and Saraigarh. This Railway bridge was destroyed in the 1934 Earthquake and with its commissioning by September, the Rail Link between two cities would be restored after 78 years.

“The substructure portion of the bridge with 39 foundation pillars was completed before Kosi floods of 2008. The girder work on the upper portion of the bridge has also been completed now. We will complete the work by August end and hand over the bridge to the railways for operation,” the official of GPT Infra Project Limited, which is involved in the construction of Bridge.

The Rail link between Kosi and Mithilanchal Divisions was destroyed after 1934  Earthquake and  further damages in subsequent years. No Road Link is there between two Regions and people of Mithilanchal have to carve out their way via  Darbhanga, Samastipur and Barauni to reach Kosi region.

Th Bridge was supposed to be completed by 2009, but due to Kosi Floods in 2008 the work got stalled. The 2km long rail bridge  has been constructed at a cost of Rs 400 crore.

“This Bridge  will not only reduce distance between Supaul and Darbhanga districts hugely but also prove a boon for the people of north Bihar. The railways will introduce train services on the broad gauge line on this particular route to much relief of the people of the area,” a railway official said.

In February this year, a 1.8km long  and  20.76 meters wide Kosi Mahasetu was inaugurated between  Madhubani and Supaul districts.

Both of these bridges were planned under Rail Vikas Yojna in 2002 by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
