Faizabad under communal tensions after mob attacked Durga Puja Procession

Faizabad the critical city of Uttar Pradesh has again come under communal tensions after a  woman, who was part of the Durga Puja procession was allegedly molested by a group of Muslim miscreants which led to communal violence.

The group was carrying the idol of Goddess Durga for immersion.  Police resorted to firing to bring the situation under control. 6 people were injured in the incident. An undeclared curfew has been imposed in Faizabad following the untoward incident.

Faizabad is a communally sensitive area and the occasion of Dussehra saw anti-social elements swinging into action at around 6. 00 pm yesterday. Members of the Hindu community retaliated when they were attacked. The mob also burnt shops at Rakabganj and other places in the city outskirts.

“Intelligence Bureau had already warned of such mishap in crowded place during festive season,” sources said. Eyewitnesses said that 4 police vans were set ablaze by the berserk mob. Badri Prasad Singh, IG (Law & Order) said that every possible step was taken to bring the situation under control. A large number of police personnel were also deployed to bring the situation to tackle the agitated mob.

The incident has thrown the Akhilesh Yadav government in bad light, being the seventh of its kind after the Samajwadi Party assumed leadership mantle.
