All Six Accused in Delhi Gang Rape demand Death Sentence

Two gang-rape accused brought before a Delhi court Sunday once again repeated their statement that they had committed a horrible crime and “deserved to be hanged”. They, however, refused to undergo an identification exercise.

The court sent the two, along with a co-accused who too did not want to face a witness for the identification drill, to judicial custody till Jan 6.

They were arrested for the gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus here Dec 16.

Metropolitan Magistrate Pawan Kumar sent accused Pawan Gupta, 19, a fruit seller, Vinay Sharma, 20, an assistant gym instructor, and Ram Singh, the bus driver, to 14 days judicial custody, after police said that custodial interrogation was not required.

All the three accused again refused to undergo the test identification parade (TIP) by the male friend of the gang-rape victim.

Gupta and Sharma told the court that “they do not want to undergo the TIP as they have committed a horrible crime and should be hanged for this”.

Akshay Thakur, a co-accused arrested from Aurangabad district in Bihar and brought to Delhi on Saturday, was remanded in judicial custody Saturday night. He will undergo the identification exercise December 26 inside the prison as he had given his consent for it.

Another accused and brother of Ram Singh, Mukesh, was identified as one of the culprits by the victim’s male friend, who was also assaulted by the accused during the brutal incident December 16.

The sixth accused, claiming to be a juvenile, would face separate proceedings before a Juvenile Justice Board.

The rape and torture occurred when the woman and her friend boarded a private bus in south Delhi after watching a movie.

The woman, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, is in critical condition and battling for life in Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.
