Bathinda Gang Rape takes twist with HIV Infected Injection

Bathinda: The abduction and gang-rape of a young woman  on January 18 in this Punjab town got another twist on  Monday when police  said that  the woman was out on bail in an attempt to murder case after she allegedly injected a married woman with HIV-infected blood last year.

The gang-rape victim, a nurse from Punjab’s Moga district and in her early 20s, was admitted to a hospital here after she alleged that she was abducted Friday, gang-raped for two days and then dumped on the roadside near here Sunday.

The nurse alleged that she was also filmed by her attackers. She was found on the Bathinda-Dabwali road, 20 km from here, Sunday evening, a police official said, adding that some motorists informed them about her.

Doctors at the civil hospital here said that her medical examination showed that she was sexually assaulted.

But police officers said they were looking at other angles in this case as the nurse herself was out on bail in a case of attempt to murder registered against her and her lover, Sunil Kumar, for allegedly injecting his wife with HIV-infected blood in March last year.

“Sunil is still in jail while she was released on bail. The allegation against them (Sunil and the nurse) was that they tried to kill his wife after she refused to give him divorce. We are looking into all aspects,” a senior police officer said here.

Police sources said the rape victim and Sunil, who had developed relations, wanted to get married.

Police investigators said the nurse told them she had gone to Chandigarh, about 230 km from here, Friday for a job in a private hospital.

“As she was standing near the inter-state bus terminus (ISBT) in Sector 43, a Maruti Swift car stopped near her and asked for directions. The victim alleged that two men and a woman were seated in the car and she was pulled inside by them.”

“She claims that she was given an injection and fell unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she saw the men making MMSes of her. She alleged that she was gang-raped by these men for two days,” a police official said.

The nurse was being treated for her injuries at the hospital.
