A Tiger in Patna Zoo

A Tiger Conservation Center will be established at Patna Zoo, also known as Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan.

The Center would provide most natural habitat to  Tigers and other members of its species, kept in the Zoo.

This includes setting up of Special  Cages with a lots of Bushes and Trees giving a  Forest Like feel to the King of Forest. These special cages would have following facilities.

A space area of 4 x 8 x 4 cubic meters for a single tiger.
- Roof for sunlight and rain protection.
- Water drainage and ventilation system.
- Slope concrete floor.
- Steel meshed net or large diameter steel rod.
- Log for claw sharpening and sleeping.
- A pond of at least 40 cm deep.
- A separate enclosure for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

The Project would cost around Rs 72 Lakhs which has been granted by Central Zoo Authority of India. The Construction works have also been started and is expected to be finished in 4 months.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park was established first as a Botanical Garden in the year 1969. Since 1973, this park has been developed as Biological Park. The land acquired from Public Works Dept. and the Revenue Dept. were declared as  Protected Forest by the State Govt. on 8th March, 1983. The park is classified as one of the 21 large zoos in the country.

The zoo has almost 100 species of animals. These include tiger, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, Himalayan bear, lion tailed macaque, golden cat, leopard cat, hog deer, giraffe, zebra, crocodile, cassowary, emu, white peacock, etc. There are almost 1200 animals in the zoo.
