Tripura Manipur and Meghalaya get their own High Courts

Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya have got their own High Courts. The move was announced last year and now the high courts are fully functional.

Mr. Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Judge of Chhattisgarh High Court, has been sworn-in as the first Chief Justice of Manipur High Court. The State Governor Gurbachan Jagat administered the oath of office to Mr. Justice Sapre in Imphal today. Justice T Meena Kumari was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court by Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary in Shillong.

Kumari was earlier a judge of the Patna High Court. Talking to reporters after her swearing-in ceremony, Justice Kumari said that her first priority area would be to see that fast-track courts are being set up in the state. The first Chief Justice of the new Tripura High Court Dr. D Y Patil will be sworn later today. The centre has constituted three new High Courts for North Eastern states. With these, the number of High Courts in India has now gone up from 21 to 24.
