Bihar sets up Online Monitoring System for Diabetic Patients in State

Bihar has setup an Online Monitoring System for Diabetic Patients with an aim to track the cases of diabetes in the state  and accomplish their effective treatment.

In this direction, State Health Society of Bihar and  Novo Nordisk Education Foundation entered into a MoU on 10th July, 2013 to develop 41 Primary Centre for Diabetes Care (PCDC) in 20 districts of Bihar. This is in line with the objective of the Programme “Changing Diabetes  Barometer-Bihar” which was piloted in 3 districts viz; Patna, Bhagalpur & Nalanda.

Diabetes is curable but it takes long time

In the 1st phase of Changing Diabetes Barometer programme the team have screened more than 2 lakh adults above the age of 20 years and the detection rate at the camp for diabetes was found to be 11.6% and prediabetes were about 15%.

To provide effective care for this alarming situation, in the 2nd phase of the programme both the organisation have jointly decided to set up diabetes care from the primary level by building infrastructure and building capacity to treat people detected with diabetes. The early detection and early treatment intervention can prevent or delay most of the long term complications for people with diabetes.

Out of forty-one PCDC as of now 40 PCDCs have become operational and the balance one, which is scheduled at Gaya Medical College, will be operational soon. These PCDCs have been installed with educational posters on diabetes for common public and the specialty diabetes clinics run once a week. On that fixed day for that PCDC any adults above the age of 20 coming to that healthcare setup OPD are asked to undergo screening for diabetes and blood pressure before consulting the doctor. People those who are existing diabetic or detected newly with diabetes are offered a unique ID number, on which a file in that ID is created to track the treatment progression both in hard and soft copies. An ID card is also issued to the people with diabetes which can be of used during any medical emergencies.

The hard copies are maintained in the PCDC and the data are available in a website (www.cdbindia.in ). This website was inaugurated by Secretary Health-Cum-Executive Director State Health Society Mr Sanjay Kumar, IAS today at Patna in a full day training programme organised to empower the doctors posted to these PCDCs. Various stake holders in health and doctors will be issued login ID and Password to enter in to the website and look at various analytical reports on age and so many socio economic status of diabetes, prevalence ,control status and the treatment progression of individuals or at various community level. He expressed his happiness on inaugurating this website and said it will be of immense use to various stake holders in health to tailor make the treatment and approach to handle the challenges of  diabetes.

He emphasised on the need of training programmes for doctors from time to time to keep them updated on the latest treatment guideline and assured State health society and Novo Nordisk Education Foundation will organise such training programmes from time to time. There were about 50 doctors  participated in this training programme. The trainers include famous diabetologists like Dr Ajay Kumar, Dr Anand Shankar, Dr Shaibal Guha, Dr Subash Kumar, Dr Manoj Kumar Sinha & Dr Samir Hamid Zargar- medical adviser of Novo Nordisk Education Foundation. He also informed that a similar training programme for the nurses was also organised on 16th September, 2013 for the nurses and paramedics posted to the PCDCs at SIHFW Patna. There were 49 nurses participated in the training programme. Such training programmes for the doctors & Nurses of other PCDCs have been planned at Muzzafarpur and Bhagalpur at the end of this week and beginning of next week respectively
