IIT Madras Professor suspended over Sexual Harassment of Student

Chennai: A Senior Professor of IIT Madras has been suspended from his duty  after a Research Scholar alleged charges of Sexual Harassment/Exploitation of against him. As per reports, the incident occurred in September  when the Professor and Research Scholar were on a trip to Poland to attend some academic event. According to a report in  TOI, the Professor is employed in Mechanical Engineering Department of Institute.

Upon returning, the victim filed a complaint with IIT Madras Administration and also approached the National Commission for Women (NCW).

In her complaint, she alleged that the Professor asked her to sleep in his hotel room. When  she tried to leave  the hotel, the professor tried to force himself on her at night.

Acting on the Inquiry of the a Special Committee formed in this case, the IIT Madras Administration ordered his suspension on Monday. He was also asked to vacate the official quarters.

A Report in New Indian Express says that the same professor was earlier caught in compromising position with a  non-teaching staff of the Institute. The woman later took voluntary retirement from her Job.

IIT Madras has, however, refused to divulge the details of the complaint, citing section 16 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

The Professor has not yet put forward his version of the incident till the time of writing this article.
