France: Michael Schumacher, the 7 times F1 Champion is in comatose after receiving serious head injuries following a Fall while skiing in the French Alps resort of Meribel, where he owns a chalet.

Schumacher, who is 44 years old, is admitted to hospital in Grenoble under the supervision of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert.

The hospital in Grenoble released a statement later Sunday saying he had “suffered a serious head trauma and arrived in a coma, making it necessary for him to undergo a neurosurgical procedure.”

Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm was unable to give any further information about his condition but confirmed he was on a private ski trip and had not been alone.

Gernigon-Lecomte said Schumacher, who has a vacation home in Meribel, had been skiing in backcountry, which usually means along unmarked trails.

“He fell around 11:00 am and hit a rock with his head,” he added.

In his career he has 91 total victories and 155 podium finishes in 308 Grand Prix races. He raced for a total of 19 years with a brief first retirement from 2006 to 2010.

Schumacher, who is a German by birth,  lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children. His Birthday falls on January 3.
