California: American Actor James Avery passed away on Tuesday in Glendale, California. The 68 year old Actor succumbed to the complications of a Open heart surgery at Glendale Adventist Medical Center Los Angeles.

He would be remembered for his role of Philip Banks (Uncle Phil) on the popular 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. This character was ranked #34 in TV Guide’s “50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time.”

His Death was confirmed by his mother, Florence J. Avery and his manager, Toni Benson. Avery had surgery on November 11 and died Tuesday evening at a hospital in Glendale, California, according to Benson.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara Avery; his mother, Florence Avery of Atlantic City; and a stepson, Kevin Waters.

Avery was born in 1945 in Pughsville, Suffolk County, Virginia and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He served in the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1968–1969, after graduating high school. Later on, he moved to San Diego, California where he began to write poetry and TV scripts.

He married his wife Barbara in 1988. He had no children of his own, adopted his wife’s son, Kevin Waters.
