Insurgents ask People to boycott India’s Republic Day in North East

Guwahati: Militant outfits in India’s northeastern states Tuesday asked people to boycott the Republic Day celebrations.

The Paresh Barua-led United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) sent an email to the media calling everyone to observe a general strike in the entire region Jan 26.

The statement was issued by the ULFA, the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the Coordination Committee (CorCom), an umbrella group of seven outfits in Manipur.

The boycott will be from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan 26, the statement said.

It shall cover all forms of transportation, movement of all vehicles, all forms of entertainment, including cinema and theatre shows, and trade and commerce.

Media, medical and religious activities have been exempted.
