President condemns attack on Indian consulate in Afghanistan

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee Friday “strongly” condemned the terrorist attack on the Indian consulate in Afghanistan and said such attacks would not deter India’s efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan.

“Such terror attacks will not deter India’s efforts to assist friendly people of Afghanistan in their efforts to reconstruct and develop their nation,” Mukherjee said in a statement here.

Commending the bravery shown by Indian and Afghan staff at the consulate, he said: “India will stand united and strong in defending its security and interests wherever they may be threatened.”

He called upon the Indian security forces to remain alert and give a “fitting response to any attempt to harm our country and people”.

Besides, Mukherjee expressed gratitude to the Afghanistan security forces for responding quickly to the situation and come to the assistance of the consulate, ensuring the safety of the staff and officers.

The president also asked the external affairs ministry to remain in close touch with Afghanistan authorities to ensure the continued safety of Indian diplomats posted in that country.
