State Funeral planned for Gopinath Munde in Beed on June 4

Central Government has decided that a State funeral will be accorded to late Gopinath Munde, who passed away today in New Delhi. The funeral will take place at his home town at Village Nathra, Tehsil Parali in the Beed District tomorrow in the afternoon.

The Government has also decided that State mourning will be observed on June 03, 2014 and there will be no official entertainment during this period.

Earlier, the President Pranab Mukherjee expressed shock, grief and sorrow over the untimely demise of Rural Development Minister Shri Gopinath Munde in a car accident today.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences he said that his passing away is a huge loss for the people of Maharashtra and India. In his death, we have lost a veteran leader who always worked for the common man.

The Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari also condoled the passing away of Shri Gopi Nath Munde, the Union Minister for Rural Development in a tragic road accident today. In his condolence message, the Vice President has said that Shri Munde was amongst the most prominent political leaders of Maharashtra who had a long and illustrious public life during which he served his state and the country in various capacities with great distinction. In his departure, we have lost a distinguished public servant whose absence will be felt by one and all.

Following is the text of Vice President’s condolence message :

“I am profoundly saddened at the passing away of Shri Gopi Nath Munde, the Union Minister for Rural Development in a tragic road accident today.

Shri Munde was amongst the most prominent political leaders of Maharashtra who had a long and illustrious public life during which he served his state and the country in various capacities with great distinction. In his departure, we have lost a distinguished public servant whose absence will be felt by one and all.

I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. I pray to the Almighty to give them strength and fortitude to bear this loss.”

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has condoled the untimely passing away of the Union Minister for Rural Development, Shri Gopinath Munde, in a road accident this morning. Expressing his sadness and shock, the Prime Minister described Shri Gopinath Munde as a true mass leader, who rose to great heights and tirelessly served people.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today offered his last respects and heartfelt tribute to his Cabinet colleague Shri Gopinath Munde. He placed a wreath on the mortal remains of the departed leader at the Bharatiya Janata Party Headquarters in New Delhi, in the presence of a large number of Union Ministers, party colleagues, workers, and family members of Shri Munde.

The Prime Minister also met the family members of Shri Gopinath Munde, and offered his condolences on the untimely passing away of Shri Munde.

The Union Cabinet today met to condole the tragic demise of Shri Gopinath Munde, the Minister for Rural Development, Drinking Water Sanitation and Panchayati Raj.

The Cabinet passed the following resolution:

The Cabinet has learnt with profound sorrow about the tragic and sudden demise of Shri Gopinath Munde, the Minister of Rural Development, Drinking Water Sanitation and Panchayati Raj in a road accident in New Delhi on the morning of 03.06.2014.

A grass root politician with a mass base and an ardent advocate of democracy, Shri Munde was born in a village in Beed, Maharashtra. He received his early education in Government and Zilla Parishad schools and started his political career as a member of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad.

Shri Munde was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for five terms and was also the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during 1992-95. He became the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 1995. He was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha in 2009 and again in 2014. Shri Munde was inducted as a Cabinet Minister in the Union Council of Ministers on 26.05.2014.

The Cabinet places on record its appreciation of Shri Gopinath Munde’s services to the nation in different capacities both at the State and the National level. The Cabinet also expresses its deep sense of loss and grief on his tragic death. In his untimely demise, the nation has lost an experienced and visionary leader who was held in high esteem across the political spectrum.
