Bihar gets NHRC notice for misappropriation of funds in Indira Awaas Yojana

New Delhi: Taking cognizance of alleged misappropriation of funds, earmarked for constructing houses under the Indira Awaas Yojana in Bihar’s Gaya district, the NHRC Thursday issued notice to the state government.

According to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), villagers of Manpur block in Gaya received only Rs.50,000 in two instalments under the scheme to construct houses instead of Rs.70,000 for those living in plains and Rs.75,000 for hill dwellers.

Despite mandatory requirement, the houses had no toilets, the NHRC said.

The sub-primary health centre in the village was allegedly mismanaged as doctors were not available and the building was used as residential premises, it said.

Several child labourers from Gaya, who had been rescued from Jaipur, were yet to be rehabilitated and provided education.

“We have issued notice to the district magistrate of Gaya asking him to look into the issues and submit a report within four weeks. The state’s chief secretary has also been asked to send his view,” it said.
