It is also being widely celebrated in other countries like Nepal, Mauritius, Bali apart from United States, United Kingdom and many others. It is the day God Shiva was married to Goddess Parvati.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has extended his greetings on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.

“महाशिवरात्रि के पावन पर्व पर आप सभी को ढेरो शुभकामनायें । Greetings on Maha Shivratri,” the Prime Minister said in a tweet.

The most notable celebration in eastern region is seen at Deoghar, which hosts Baba Baidyanath Temple. A grand procession called Shiv Baaraat in organized in the evening, which is attended by Lakhs of devotees.

In Nepal, the Pashupatinath Temple witnesses a huge crowd of devotees today. Last year around 7 Lakh devotees from India and Nepal visited the temple on the day of Shivaratri. One of the major attractions of the festival are the Indian ‘Naga babas’ who remain nude and offer puja in their typical manner to Lord Shiva, one of the Trinity that dominates the Hindu religion.

The annual carnival of Trinidad and Tobago is organized on the occasion of Shivaratri. Thousands of Hindu women dressed in saris and men in kurtas spent entire night in over 400 temples across the land, offering special jhalls (a mixture of milk, dhai, flowers, sugar-cane, sweets) to Lord Shiva.
