This would be the first foreign visit of Sirisena after taking over as the President of Sri Lanka.

Maithripala Sirisena was elected as the new President of Sri Lanka on January 9, 2015 beating the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa after securing 51.28 percent of the votes cast. The soft spoken 63-year-old has vowed to root out corruption and bring constitutional reforms.

Within days of taking the oath, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera visited India in January. The Sri Lankan minister had said that the nation sees India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a huge opportunity. He had also said that the visit to India within 5 days of President’s swearing-in shows the nation’s priority.
