Alam was released from Baramulla prison following the new government’s policy to free political prisoners who do not face criminal charges. Alam is the chairman of Muslim League, a constituent of hard-line Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and is widely seen as the latter’s successor.

He had been convicted for organizing an anti-India protests resulting into the death of 112 people in stone pelting across the Valley during 2010.

“We have called a two-day bandh from today over the decision of the state government… It is a decision against the nation, how can BJP now call itself a nationalist (party),” JKNPP patron Bhim Singh said Sunday.

Not only NPP, but BJP has also protested the decision. Even though the party itself is a part of J&K government, BJP youth wing members said they are protesting against the administration.

After party meeting over the release of hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam by the Jammu and Kashmir government, state BJP President Jugal Kishore on Sunday said that party has registered protest over the same and is upset on the decision.

Kishore said that the party doesn’t approve decision to release Alam and that PDP didn’t even consult with the BJP on the matter. Kishore said that the party will work on safeguarding the collision so as to respect the mandate of the people of J and K and at the same time, will not compromise on its principles.

He also said that any decision on the matter will be taken after a meeting with the deputy chief minister of the state.
