Bihar declares Mandan Dham in Saharsa a protected site

Saharsa: Bihar Government has declared the Mandan Dham in Saharsa as a protected religious site. A decision regarding the same was taken by state government on Tuesday, March 3.

The process was initiated last year itself when a team of State archaeology department had visited the place for study. Later, the local chapter of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had also inspected the place.

The place, whose history dates back to Gupta period, is immensely popular in folklore. It is located in a small town known as Mahishi in Saharsa district of Bihar.

It was the residence of famous Hindu Philosopher Maṇḍana Mishra, who wrote on the Mīmāmsā and Advaita systems of thought, and was a student and follower of Ādi Śankara. Later he became the first head of Sringeri Math located in Karnataka.

It was at this place that Adi Shankaracharya had the historic debate with Mandana Mishra and his wife Ubhaya Bharati.

The famous Ugratara temple is also located in the premised of Mandan Dham.

The village Mahishi is well connected to district headquarter Saharsa via means of road transport which in turn is well connected to different parts of India via Rail, Road and air transport. The nearest railway station is Saharsa while the nearest airport is Patna Airport.
