Senior JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav has invited sharp criticism for his sexist comments in the Rajya Sabha on south Indian women. During the debate on the insurance bill in the house he referred to “saanvli (dusky)” south Indian women and “their bodies”.

Defending party chief Sharad Yadav, the Janata Dal (United) on Saturday said the former may have made a wrong selection of words during his address in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, but his intentions were not wrong. Sharad Yadav, whose comments on South Indian women sparked off criticism from a cross section of politicians, had on Friday refused to apologise for his comments. The 67-year-old leader also defended his remarks, saying he attacked the preference for fair women in the country.
