The Kenyan actress wore the $150,000 Calvin Klein dress adorned with 6,000 pearls to Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Authorities say the thief returned the dress on Friday, two days after it was stolen from Nyong’o’s West Hollywood hotel room.

The thief reportedly tipped off celebrity news site TMZ after learning the pearls on the dress were fake.

LT. MICHAEL WHITE, LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT says, “We received a call from a media source stating that they had received an anonymous call saying the dress had been returned to the hotel and placed in a restroom on the second floor of the hotel that was in the process of being renovated.”

Authorities went to investigate and found the dress.

“They found the dress inside of this black garment bag, hidden behind a garbage bag under a counter.”

TMZ reported the thief removed two pearls from the dress and took them to the LA Garment District where they were told they were not real.

“We will maintain custody of the dress until we have a representative from the company or the victim show up to claim up.”

Lt. White says the investigation will continue whether the pearls are fake or real.

If caught, the suspect faces burglary and grand theft charges.
