Apple’s selling more iPhones in China than in the U.S. for the first time ever with a 70 percent jump in sales here in the last quarter.

So how’d they do it?

“Only about a year and a half ago I was talking about why Apple wasn’t cool here. It was getting knocked around by Samsung, and even homegrown, cheaper brands like Xiaomi. They gave the Chinese what they wanted – a bigger screen – and Apple got punished. But Apple hit back with its bigger and better iPhone 6.”

And in time for Chinese New Year, which was in February – a time of gift-giving madness.

And according to one luxury survey, the iPhone rose to the top for presents among the wealthy.

“Here, Apple’s about status. One Chinese sociologist told me chasing brands, it’s all about face. That’s why Starbucks is always so packed, even though a latte costs more than lunch. If you can drink it, you show you’ve made it.”

So what happens when everywhere you look, people have an iPhone – especially in a country notorious for fast-changing fads and copycats waiting to pounce?

That’s Apple’s next challenge: keeping it cool
