Muslims in Gujarat take to street against GUJCOC Anti-terror Bill

Vadodara: Muslims in India took to street after Gujarat passed a contentious anti-terror bill that seeks to make confessions made before police officers admissible in court as evidence.

Despite being rejected in the past, the state government on Tuesday passed the stringent Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GUJCOC) bill, which among other provisions allows law enforcement agencies to tap telephones and detain suspects for 30 days.

Reported to be framed on the lines of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), the GUJCOC bill was rejected twice in 2004 and 2008 by the then presidents APJ Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil respectively.

The bill was passed by a majority vote amid stiff resistance from opposition Congress party, which walked out of the House over its controversial provisions.
