Supreme Court allows Italian Marine to stay in Italy for 3 more Months

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today extended stay of Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre, accused of killing fishermen on the high sea, for three more months on health grounds.

Marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, part of a military team protecting a privately owned cargo ship, maintain they mistook fishermen for pirates and fired warning shots into the water in 2012.

Supreme Court had allowed Latorre to temporarily return to Italy for heart surgery, but Girone remains in India awaiting trial. L

awyer Pinky Anand said the court would also hear their petition in the last week of April to consider whether to begin their trial.
