The people of Kalikavu village, around 12 kilometres from Malappuram, have been suffering from drought and a severe drinking water crisis.

This prompted a group of 20 women, under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, to take up well digging, a job traditionally done by men.

Gram Panchayat President, A Jamila, said that the women have succeeded because of their unity and determination. These women have dug 100 wells in different areas of their village in the last one year.

The villagers are also pleased with the efforts of the local women. However there are safety hazards related to this work and the women asked for government’s help in overcoming them.
