India Bangladesh Land Swap Bill brings happiness for Enclave Dwellers of both countries

Cooch Behar: Bangladeshis living on border between India and Bangladesh welcomed move by the government to operationalise the Land Boundary Agreement with Dhaka ending decades of uncertainty for thousands living on the wrong side of the border.

Rajya Sabha passed the 119th Constitution Amendment Bill thus entailing exchange of enclaves between the two countries. Bangladeshis living at enclaves in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal expressed their joy while welcoming the move.

Secretary of India Bangladesh enclave exchange coordination committee, Diptiman Sengupta, welcomed the Bill and called it a commendable move of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.

He added that the Bill was earlier presented in 1958, 1974, 2011 and now in 2015. The cabinet finally cleared the Bill on Tuesday (May 05). This Bill seeks to pave the way for land exchange with Bangladesh in four of India’s states- West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya and Assam.
