Mumbai students rally against smoking on eve of World No Tobacco Day

Mumbai, May 30 (ANI): School students in Mumbai took out a rally on Saturday (May 30) to spread awareness on the consequences of smoking and the huge damage it inflicts on the health of people. Around 500 students from 132 schools rallied on the streets demanding tobacco free society and a ban on sale of tobacco products around schools and institutions. The anti-tobacco campaign, organised by a non-profit organization, was held on the eve of World No Tobacco Day, observed on May 31 every year. The students holding placards and banners were accompanied by teachers and also performed a skit to spread the awareness among the peers. A student said tobacco advertising companies must be banned by the government. More than 12 voluntary organisations have joined hands with the non-profit organisation to spread the awareness. An online campaign was also initiated on Saturday wherein people can post pictures or any information regarding violation of the various laws enacted by the Indian government in 2003. The increase in the number of kiosks selling tobacco products near schools has exposed the children to the perils of smoking.
