Paramilitary force warns about rise in child trafficking after Nepal earthquakes

Siliguri, May 16 (ANI): In the wake of the catastrophic earthquakes that struck Nepal, India’s paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal (Armed Border Force) in Siliguri city of West Bengal has sounded an alarm about rising cases of child trafficking due to a lack of security and resources like food, water and shelter. As many as 7,000 women and girls are trafficked from Nepal to India every year, and around 200,000 are now working in Indian brothels, according to UNICEF. Coordinator of north Bengal unit of a non-governmental organization, Child In Need Institute (CINI), Shekhar Saha said on Saturday that there has been a marked increase in the cases of trafficking. The two massive earthquakes in Nepal that displaced thousands have acted like a shot in the arm for traffickers. SSB organised a workshop to combat the menace of trafficking and has reached out to NGOs to expand its reach.
