They were two women who lived a life of service, love and devotion – that’s how Pope Francis described the two 19th century Palestinian nuns… among four women who were conferred sainthood in a move that highlighted the Pope’s longstanding support for Christians in the Middle East who face persecution by Islamic extremists.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas joined hundreds of pilgrims, some waving the Palestinian flag, to honor the two women who lived under the rule of the Ottoman empire in the late 1800s.

Their canonization came just days after the Vatican formalized its de facto recognition of the State of Palestine.
