Residents in Kerala eagerly wait for monsoon as mercury soars

Alappuzha/ Thiruvananthapuram, May 30 (ANI): As intense heat wave conditions continue to sweep southern India, a delayed monsoon is adding to the woes of the peeved residents. Monsoon was expected to arrive in Kerala on May 30 but it has missed its date and is reportedly expected to be delayed by a few days. India is expected to see below-average rains this year as the emergence of an El Nino weather pattern will likely cause dry spells across South Asia. The forecast for poor rains ahead of the June-to-September monsoon season has also raised concerns of droughts in India. El Nino is a warming of sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific which can prompt dry spells in certain areas and heavy rains in others. This week’s heat wave, the deadliest in a decade, has exposed the vulnerability of people who work outside in extreme temperatures. Most of those who have died are labourers or old people suffering from sunstroke or dehydration.
