He started his career as ASP of Belgaum and later went on to become SP of Chitradurga and Gulbarga districts. Later he was appointed as the DCP (South) in Bangalore. He has also served the Anti-Naxal Force with headquarters in Udupi-Karkala. He was instrumental in solving several terror related cases.

During his stint in Bangalore, he was widely popular for his tough action against rowdies. He was well appreciated by public for this. Many went on to call him Singham of Bangalore.

He also served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In March 2013, he was appointed as ACP (Law and Order) Bangalore after replacing T Suneel Kumar. However his appointment was cancelled by High Court as a result of a prolonged litigation. In July last year, however he was appointed to the same post.

In October last year, he was instrumental in getting the free passes returned to the organizers of Sunburn festival in Bangalore. It happened that a Police inspector demanded 300 free passes for the event and threatened to disrupt the event in case his demands are not met. Usually 100 free passes are voluntarily given to Police department as goodwill gesture, but this 300 was burning a hole in the pocket of organizers. They contacted Alok who in turned contacted the DCP of that region and the passes were finally returned by the inspector, after DCP summoned him and punished him for making illegal demands.

Recently, Alok was into a controversy when he opposed the Government’s move to divide the city into 2 parts and the introduction of area-specific Additional Commissioner of Police rather than the role specific suffixes like “law and order” or “crime”.

Alok Kumar who played a key role in several shoot-outs scored 84 and came first in the additional commissioner category.
