Moscow: On Moscow’s Red Square, the Russian military is preparing for its annual May 9 Victory Parade marking the allied victory in World War 2. But this year, the 70th anniversary, the parade will also serve as a reminder of Moscow’s military strength, amid rising tensions with the West over Russia’s involvement in eastern Ukraine.

But the military muscle flexing isn’t confined to Moscow.

On the North Sea, NATO is also making its presence felt, launching one of its biggest-ever anti-submarine exercises.

More than a dozen vessels from 11 countries are participating.

NATO will simulate its search and destroy operations, in one of Europe’s most hostile sea environments.

With Russian aircraft having repeatedly approached Nordic and Baltic airspace in recent months, NATO members say they need to be prepared for any provocation.
