Farmers in Kashmir receive meager compensation for crop loss

Jammu, June 03 (ANI): Farmers in Jammu and Kashmir threatened to launch an agitation after they received compensation as low as rupees 47 from the government for the losses suffered in last year’s floods. Displaying their compensation cheques, farmers complained that they received very less amount as help from the administration. In September 2014, Jammu and Kashmir was hit by massive floods. The farmers had lost their crops and land. The government had promised to compensate their loss, but released cheques amounting as low as rupees 47 and farmers have refused to accept the compensation, calling it a mockery of their loss. Meanwhile, Director of Agriculture Department, Jammu, SS Jamwal said that the compensation awarded to the farmers would be revised. He clarified that the compensation was made only for the month of September when the floods hit the state adding that Rabi (winter-sown) crops damage was not included in the compensation.
