Farmer’s self-immolation in Karnataka triggers protest by BJP

Bengaluru, June 27 (ANI): Members of Bharatiya Janata Party took to the

streets of Bengaluru on Saturday to protest the alleged indifferent

attitude of Congress-led government towards sugarcane farmers in

Karnataka. The protest was prompted by the suicide of a debt ridden

farmer in Mandya district who set his sugarcane field on fire and then

jumped into it on Thursday. The farmer, identified as Linge Gowda, was

upset at the non-payment of dues by sugar mills and harassment by

moneylenders which pushed him to take this extreme step. Thousands of BJP

members holding party flags raised slogans against the state government.

BJP member Suresh Kumar said the Congress government is answerable for

the plight of sugarcane growers in the state.
