Fishermen in Kochi defy fishing ban

Kochi, June 02 (ANI): Fishermen in Kerala went fishing defying central government’s ban on fishing using motorized boats beyond 12 nautical miles away from the country’s western coast for a period of 61 days. The ban on trawling proposed by the central government was to be implemented by all the maritime states in the western coast beginning the first of June till 31st of July for a period of 61 days. But the government of Kerala has decided to defy the ban and has allowed its fishermen to go fishing till June 14. The state government of Kerala argues that the duration of the ban traditionally has been from June 14 for a period of 47 days and that the new ban would adversely affect the lives of fishermen who would be unemployed during the two-month period. A fisherman Jose said that they would go ahead with fishing as they had the support of the state government.
