India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant undocked at Kochi

Kochi, June 11 (ANI): India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was undocked after completion of structural work at Cochin Shipyard Limited. INS Vikrant, the first of two planned Vikrant-class carriers, was officially launched in August 2013 when it completed the first phase of construction. The undocking is part of the second phase of work on the carrier which is expected to be completed by 2017. The outfitting of the aircraft carrier will continue for over a year and a half before the basin and sea trials begin. The ship has a length of 260 metres, breadth of 60 metres and weights about 40,000 tonnes. Indian navy’s Directorate of Naval Design took care of basic design of the aircraft carrier while design team of Cochin Shipyard Limited developed the detailed design. The carrier is slated for induction at the end-2018.
