Monsoon rains drench southern India, give respite from sweltering heat

Andhra Pradesh/ Kerala, June 9 (ANI): Southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala have received substantial rainfall with the arrival of monsoon, thus giving respite to people from sweltering heat. Heat waves have killed more than 2,200 people throughout the country with temperatures rising past 46 Celsius (114 Fahrenheit) in some states. People were carrying umbrellas to cover themselves. The weather office said conditions were favourable for further advance of the monsoon. The arrival of monsoon has already been delayed by about a week, worrying both farmers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. India scaled down this year’s monsoon rainfall, between June and September, citing an El Nino weather pattern, raising fears of the first drought in six years. The farm ministry has put in place contingency plans for about 580 districts to meet any exigencies.
