Assam, June 15 (ANI): Flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim as most of rivers flowed above the danger mark due to relentless rainfall. According to local media reports, over 300,000 people from around 16 villages have been affected with the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing above the level of danger. The worst hit areas include Barpeta, Dhemaji, Nalbari, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Kamrup. The tributaries of the Brahmaputra have washed away bridges and embankments in many districts of the state. Over 11,000 hectares of crop is under water, further deteriorating the condition of the villagers who accused the government of not doing enough to improve their situation. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has already put the state on high alert and relief camps have been set up to accommodate the people affected. Over the past years successive governments have built levees along most of the length of the volatile Brahmaputra, which is Assam’s main river and is fed by Himalayan snow-melt and some of the world’s heaviest rainfall.
