Northeastern state welcomes India-Bangladesh bus service

Agartala, June 08 (ANI): India’s northeastern state of Tripura welcomed the new bus service between its capital Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. The bus service was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on Saturday during Modi’s visit to the eastern neighbour. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also present when the bus was flagged off in Dhaka. The service would reduce the distance between the two Indian cities by over 1,000 kilometre, thus facilitating visits to mainland Indian states by people of the mountainous northeastern region. The distance between Kolkata and Agartala via Guwahati is 1,650 kilometre by road, but the distance between the two cities via Dhaka is only around 500 km. The northeastern region has narrow neck land corridor. Transportation via Bangladesh would be much easier as the mountainous northeastern states share boundaries with Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan and China.
