Stranded pilgrims airlifted from Uttarakhand, CM says situation normal

Sonprayag, Joshimath, Govindghat, Dehradun, June 27 (ANI): Authorities stepped up evacuation of pilgrims from various parts of Uttarakhand on Saturday after incessant rains resulted in suspension of the Hindu Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage to Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines. Helicopters were pressed into action to airlift pilgrims from areas cut off due to damaged roads and bridges. State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) and police officials were seen leading rescue operations as water levels refused to recede and rivers continued flowing with full strength. Landslides were reported from across the state, badly restricting movement of pilgrims and vehicles. Four bridges collapsed in Sonprayag town in the state earlier in the day due to heavy rains. In a sign of relief, the weather cleared on Saturday after days of rains. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that there was no need to panic.
