Water from disputed dam released for farming in Kerala

Idukki, June 04 (ANI): Water from a disputed dam in Kerala was released for agricultural purposes in neighbouring Tamil Nadu state, ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. The two states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have fought a long legal battle over the Mullaperiyar Dam on the river Periyar. The conflict revolves around the water level of the dam and safety concerns posed by more than 117-year-old dam to the people of Kerala. Based on an agreement signed during the British colonial era, water from the dam is used for various purposes including farming in the drought-prone Tamil Nadu. A shutter of the dam was opened in Kerala by officials from Tamil Nadu following a direction from Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa. The order to open the shutter was given following complaints from Tamil farmers whose crops were damaged due to the scanty pre-monsoon rainfall.
