Abdul Kalam’s body laid to rest in Rameswaram with Guard of Honour

Rameswaram, July 30 (ANI): Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s last rites were performed on Thursday (July 30) and his body was laid to rest in his ancestral village in Tamil Nadu. Thousands of people thronged Rameswaram to bid farewell to the 11th President of India, who was popularly called the “People’s President”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the family members of Kalam during the funeral ceremony. Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Manohar Parrikar paid their last respects to the former President. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was also present at the funeral ceremony. Kalam’s body was buried with full respect amid sounds of prayer and hymns. After the burial he was also given the guard of honour. A funeral procession was earlier taken out in Kalam’s hometown before the rites were performed in the presence of his family members and senior dignitaries. Kalam’s body, wrapped in tricolour, was carried by defence personnel during the funeral procession. Kalam, a renowned scientist, died of cardiac arrest on Monday (July 27) while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Managament in Shillong.
