Amarnath Yatra brings windfall for locals in Kashmir

Sonamarg, July 10 (ANI): An annual pilgrimage to a cave shrine in Kashmir has brought windfall for a large number of casual workers. About 30,000 daily wage earners stand to benefit as the two month pilgrimage kicked off last week. Local shopkeepers, tourist guides, palanquin bearers are among others who are doing brisk business as thousands of Hindu trek the 16 kilometre route to the Amarnath Shrine. The locals, mostly Muslims, are happy with the turn out of pilgrims this year. Pilgrims undertake the journey to the shrine cave to worship Shivlinga, believed to be the symbol of Lord Shiva. The cave is located at a snow capped mountainous peak of the Himalayas, about 70 kilometres from Srinagar.
