Ban on trawling in Kerala, adds to the woes of fishermen

Kochi, July 02 (ANI): Fishermen in Kerala expressed their grievances as a 47-day-long trawling ban along the state’s coastal line continued to affect their daily lives. The annual monsoon trawling ban, which prevents traditional fishing activity involving motorised boats beyond 12 nautical miles away from the coast, will see around 5,000 mechanised trawlers off the territorial waters at various harbours. A fisherman, V Krishnan, said they get meagre pension to sustain their lives. The ban on trawling proposed by the Central government was to be implemented by all the maritime states, beginning 1st June till 31st July for a period of 61 days.
