Beleaguered flood victims in WB demand permanent embankment on river

Jalpaiguri, July 05 (ANI): The flood victims in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal demanded a permanent embankment on Teesta River to prevent flooding. The river overflows every year during the monsoon season, inundating nearby areas, said the locals. A resident, Laxmi Das, said it was difficult for her and her family to survive as they lost everything in the floods. While many people have moved to safer havens after the floods, many others continue to live in relief camps, said another local, Sujan Das. Floods triggered by heavy torrential rains had left thousands of villagers homeless in West Bengal on Thursday (July 02). Hundreds of homes in several villages of Jalpaiguri district were washed away when excess water in the Teesta River overflew following heavy rains in the hilly regions of the state.
