Border haats at Indo-Bangla border to give boost to bilateral trade activities

Tripura, July 08 (ANI): India’s Northeast region shares 1,880-km-long border with Bangladesh, and boast huge potential for developing cross-border trade. In an effort to uplift the socio-economic status of people living on both sides of the border and promote trade activities, both countries have been working constantly to develop `border haats’ or markets. Recently, a new border haat became operational at Kamalasagar in Sipahijala district of Tripura, bordering Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district. This is the 2nd border haat in Tripura and the 4th along Indo-Bangladesh border, developed at an approximate cost of Rs. 2.5 crores by India’s Ministry of Commerce. The border haat was jointly inaugurated through video conferencing by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina during Modi’s recent visit to Dhaka. Some 25 vendors from both sides of the border living within 5 km radius of the market will be able to sell local commodities once a week.
